Top 10 Defensive Companies To Watch In Right Now

I like the health care sector. A lot.

There is always a need for quality medicine and medical care, no matter how the economy is doing. And they hold defensive stocks that can weather ups and downs nicely.

As populations age in developed countries, health care will gain in importance. And as emerging markets adopt modern medical practices, the use of low-cost, high-volume health care products will ramp up. The sector could face unprecedented demand.

In the health-care sector, one of my favorites is Covidien PLC (NYSE: COV). Of the 87 firms in the advanced medical equipment industry, it is among the 11 companies that pay a dividend.

Solar financing is still a relatively new phenomenon but it's come a long way in just the last few years. Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-A  ) recently sold $1 billion in financing for a utility-scale project, and SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) and SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) are two of the leasing leaders who have developed financing that brings in tax equity.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) , a leader in rooftop installations, finally reported its full fourth-quarter earnings. It still expects to grow extremely quickly in 2014, but the question now is how much of its sales mix will be leases versus cash sales. Last quarter, cash sales were higher than expected, and the trend will continue in Q1. SolarCity has pushed solar leases to grow its business but as competitors offer competitive prices for cash or loan sales it may not generate nearly $2 per watt in retained value in leases. Watch the mix of projects in the future to see if SolarCity can live up to its lofty valuation.

Kallo believes recent weakness has created an opportunity to buy on the cheap, "CTY's pullback of approximately 35% since Feb. 27 provides an excellent buying opportunity, in our view, on the stock most levered to the U.S. rooftop market, which will likely undergo a boom over the next several years. SCTY's cost reductions and scale continue to strengthen its position in the market. Additionally, innovative financing products, such as solar ABS', provide relatively low-cost capital for SCTY to capitalize on the expansive U.S. greenfield opportunity."

According to various disclosures, transactions of $2k, $2.5k, $3k, $4k, $7.5k, $12.5k and $15k have or will occur to mention Dephasium Corp in various investment newsletters. Dephasium Corp has been getting plenty of off and on attention for a couple of months now, but what been pretty strange is the company issuing a press release to announce that an unidentified third party, without the DPHS approval, has listed its shares on the Boerse Berlin Stock Exchange. The press release warned that this could be the first salvo in a ignificant naked shorting attack directed at the Companygiven that the Berlin exchange is one of few stock exchanges in the world that allows listing and trading of a company's stock without the consent or authorization of the company being listed in order to facilitate short-selling. A quick look at Dephasium Corp financials reveals no revenues; net losses of $10k (most recent reported quarter), $17k and $11k plus net income of $388k; and $51k to cover $9k in current liabilities at the end of March. In other words, Dephasium Corp isn making money but someone else is trying to make some from it.

Osiris (NASDAQ: OSIR  ) received Canadian approval for the world's first stem cell drug, Prochymal, for children battling acute graft-versus-host disease, or GvHD, last year. One of the companies attempting to develop a better treatment for chronic diabetic foot ulcers is Osiris Therapeutics (NASDAQ: OSIR  ) . Earlier this month, Osiris shares more than doubled as the company announced positive data for its CDFU drug Grafix. The study results were very impressive to say the least; the study was stopped early due to the overwhelming efficacy exhibited by the treatment. A main highlight is the fact that 62% of Grafix patients had their wound closed at 12 weeks, compared to only 21% of patients using conventional methods. Clearly, the efficacy in this endpoint was overwhelming. Grafix also achieved all of the secondary endpoints for the trial, and more importantly demonstrated a relatively benign safety record.

    >>Hack Earnings Season With These Serial Surprisers

If you take a look at the chart for Lee Enterprises, you'll notice that this stock is just starting to spike higher back above its 50-day moving average of $2.89 a share with strong upside volume. Volume already today has registered over 360,000 shares, which is quickly approaching its three-month average action of 399,735 shares. This move is quickly pushing shares of LEE within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in LEE if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.14 a share to its 52-week high at $3.20 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 399,735 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then LEE will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $4 to $5 a share.

Traders can look to buy LEE off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $2.71 or at $2.60 a share. One could also buy LEE off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
