More states, cities raising minimum wage

The fast-food walkouts Thursday are part of a broader nationwide effort to raise the minimum wage for millions of low-income workers, a campaign that's notching growing success in states and cities across the USA.

Supporters say that raising wages would address growing inequality between the rich and poor as the nation continues to recover too slowly from the Great Recession. Opponents say pay hikes would mean lost jobs and could slow a fragile recovery.

PROTESTS: Fast-food workers strike for higher wages

A bill, backed by President Obama, to raise the federal minimum hourly wage from $7.25 to $10.10 by late 2016, has stalled in Congress due to Republican opposition.

But seven states have passed legislation this year to raise the minimum wage. Four have approved increases to at least $10.10 an hour — Connecticut, Maryland, Hawaii and Vermont. Three others — Minnesota, West Virginia and Delaware — have passed smaller increases.

Proposals to increase the minimum wage have been introduced in at least 30 other states, according to the Associated Press.

Cities are also taking action. San Francisco, Santa Fe, San Jose and Washington are among cities that have voted to increase the minimum wage above the proposed $10.10 federal level. Others are weighing increases, including New York, San Diego and Portland, Maine. Seattle is considering setting the nation's highest minimum wage — $15 an hour, which would match what the striking fast-food workers are seeking.

Proponents say a minimum wage increase would bolster an economic recovery that has mostly benefited the wealthy who own stocks even as job gains have been dominated by low-wage sectors. Low-wage industries such as restaurant and retail accounted for 22% of jobs lost in the recession but 44% of jobs added in the past four years, according to a recent study by the National Employment Law Project. Mid- and high-wage sectors, meanwhile, still have far fewer jobs than they did before the recession.

"The! economy has not been working for most workers," says David Cooper, economic analyst at the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute. "Most people are still struggling."

The federal minimum wage was last raised in 2009, and increases in recent decades have not kept pace with inflation, Cooper says. The current $7.25 federal minimum is 27% below the 1968 rate after accounting for inflation.

An EPI study found that raising the minimum federal rate to $10.10 would raise pay for 28 million workers. Those include workers earning $7.25, others earning from $7.25 to $10.10, and some paid $10.10 or slightly above who would benefit from a higher pay scale.

"It's not going to drastically change lifestyles, but it's the difference between being able to afford a new car payment and moving into a better apartment with an extra bedroom for your kids," Cooper says.

The wage increases would pump an additional $22 billion into the economy, Cooper says, noting that low-wage workers tend to spend most of their paychecks, while higher-wage employees save more.

But Michael Saltsman, research director for the Employment Policies Institute, says minimum wage increases would force businesses to lay off workers or hire fewer people.

"When their costs increase, they either have to pass them off through higher prices or produce a product or service at a lower cost," Saltsman says. "That means doing it with fewer workers."

Fast-food restaurants, he says, would be more prone to replace employees with new technology, such as touch-screen ordering devices.

A study released in February by the Congressional Budget Office found that boosting the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour would lift 900,000 Americans out of poverty but reduce employment by about 500,000 workers.

Cooper notes that the report analyzed other studies of minimum wage increases and that more recent studies have found minimal job losses.

Best Solar Companies To Invest In 2015

SolarCity (SCTY) leases solar panels. Tesla Motors (TSLA) manufactures and sells electric cars. And as we all know, they’re both the brainchild of one man: Elon Musk.

Reuters

Which got me thinking: Does that link impact how Tesla and Solar City trade? On first glance, it sure appears that way. Today, for instance, SolarCity has dropped 4.7% after it beat fourth-quarter earnings forecasts but guided below Street expectations for the current quarter. Tesla, with little meaningful news of its own unless you count this, has fallen 1.5%.

To see if there was more than anecdotal evidence, I ran the 24-day correlation (essentially one month of trading) between SolarCity and Tesla. A correlation of 100% means two stocks move in lockstep, while a correlation of -100% means they move in complete opposition. Right now, the correlation between the two stocks is 61.1%, well above the 12-month average of 37.7%. During the past 12 months, the correlation between the two stocks has been as low as -39.8%, which means they were generally heading in opposite directions during that period–and as high as 77.9%, meaning they were pretty much marching to the beat of the same drummer.

If you were lucky enough to be in an American Community (OTCMKTS:ACYD) position anytime before October 8th, then congratulations - you're up big. Now get out. Instead, use freed-up that capital to take on a position in Real Goods Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:RSOL), which looks like it's at the beginning of a good-sized rally.

Last Thursday when I suggested American Community (OTCMKTS:ACYD) was a stock that should be shed immediately, and replaced with a position in Real Goods Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:RSOL), I didn't win a lot of friends. After all, ACYD was the market's newest darling, in the middle of a red-hot runup, while RSOL was "just another solar name" that happened to be lucky enough to stumble its way above a key support line. Well, I hate to be the one to day I told you so, but, I told you so. American Community shares are down 35% since then, while Real Goods Solar shares are up 36% in the meantime. Both stocks seem pretty well entrenched in their current trends too.

These 3 Sky-High Plays Are Still Value Stocks

I admit it. After the dot-com bubble burst and I got my head handed to me on a silver brokerage platter, I have diligently avoided momentum stocks.

bargain 185x185 These 3 Sky High Plays Are Still Value StocksThe closest I'll get is to sell naked puts that are way out of the money to try and capture a few bucks from their soaring prices.

Top 5 Heal Care Stocks To Own For 2016

But what happens when you find a stock that not only has a head of steam behind it … but remain attractive on a value basis? Here’s a look at three such value stocks that have moved up big in the past year or so and still aren’t overpriced.

Value Stock #1: Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG)

cmg These 3 Sky High Plays Are Still Value StocksI have really gone back and forth on Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) as a value stock. I thought it was once outrageously overvalued and considered shorting. Then it seemed fairly priced. And now?

I have to admit that Chipotle is executing incredibly well, and I think it's actually a value stock despite having almost doubled off its 52-week low of $307.

Take a look at CMG stock's recent earnings. In Q4, revenue increased 21% to $844 million. Net income was up 29.8%. Same-store sales were up 9.3%. That last stat in particular is just outrageous for any industry, much less restaurants. For all of 2013, EPS was up by 19.7%, revenue by 17.7% and comps by 5.6%.

These numbers are fantastic.

With $30 a share in cash, CMG stock effectively trades at $515. I tend to do quick-and-dirty PEG ratio valuations, so here’s one for CMG. With $12.91 expected EPS in FY14, and a 22% long-term growth rate, I might normally put fair value at $286. However, a company in the midst of sustainable hyper-growth, with no debt, fantastic FCF and investors that continue to bid up the stock … that number frankly goes out the window.

It becomes an issue of what the market will pay, and the market is paying a premium, as it always has for CMG stock. I consider Chipotle a value stock until something truly awful happens.

Value Stock #2: Amazon (AMZN)

amazon1 These 3 Sky High Plays Are Still Value StocksI view Amazon (AMZN) a bit differently as a value stock. While AMZN stock has struggled in past weeks, it’s still about 40% above its 52-week low and 14% below its 52-week-high. All told, Amazon was up 60% in 2013, so it had a bit of steam to give off anyway.

With AMZN stock, traditional valuation also goes out the window. Amazon is, quite simply, the greatest retailer on the face of the earth with a model nobody can beat. Everything can be purchased at Amazon. If you have Amazon Prime, you get it in two days with free shipping. The number of Amazon Prime customers is in the millions, and the company is going to raise the price for the service — and while surveys are showing that not all customers are happy about the potential change, I think you’ll find things to be much different when push comes to shove.

Amazon is single-handedly going to be the downfall of Best Buy (BBY) and Sears (SHLD) … although the latter is doing itself no favors in execution, and Amazon will be here forever. The company is willing to grow revenues without concern for profitability, and it can do this because it has nearly $9 billion in net cash and can enter virtually any market.

With $18 in cash on hand, AMZN stock is trading at an effective price of $335. But it’s really less the actual price that makes Amazon a long-term value stock, and instead the way it conducts business and the way investors view it.

Value Stock #3: Priceline.com (PCLN)

priceline 185 These 3 Sky High Plays Are Still Value StocksNow we come to Priceline.com (PCLN), maybe the best value stock of the lot.

It seems hard to believe that a few years ago, PCLN stock was trading for next to nothing. It did a reverse split, and its business took off around the same time. PCLN stock was up 80% in 2013 and is ahead another 8% this year.

PCLN is all about cash, cash, cash. It has $6.6 billion in cash and short-term investments, or about $128 per share. It has almost no capex, so free cash flow is crazy good, with about $1.7 billion in the trailing 12 months. Plus, PCLN continues to grow earnings at 20% per year.

On $51.56 in FY14 earnings, a 20x estimate gets PCLN fair value to $1,031. But I add a 20% premium for stocks with cash hoards and lots of FCF, so to me, at the effective cash-included price of $1,160, it’s still undervalued.

As a note: Priceline reports earnings after the bell Thursday.

As of this writing, Lawrence Meyers owned shares of AMZN and has sold naked puts against PCLN. Over the past few years, government bonds have produced almost zero income for investors. This has led to many people searching high and low for income opportunities. High-yield bonds (though recently falling out of favor) and dividend factories have benefited greatly from this search. MLPs fall into this category, as distribution yields have grown. One such MLP, EV Energy Partners (EVEP), is currently yielding over 8%, which is why it landed high on the list of stock screens. After careful analysis, it is easy to realize there is more to this company than a great yield can tell us.

Investors in master limited partnerships (MLPs) tend to keep a close eye on interest rates, and for good reason. Yield-seeking investors are generally looking to minimize their risk to capital, and as interest rates rise other options may present themselves for generating yield at a lower risk. The cost of doing business may also rise for an MLP when interest rates are rising, cutting into the distributable cash flow (DCF). Thus, a low-yielding MLP may find itself especially vulnerable to a decline in price if interest rates rise.

One example I sometimes use to highlight the risk in a rising interest rate environment is the low-yielding MLP Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE: PSXP), which was one of the most highly-anticipated initial public offerings of 2013. PSXP owns some of the midstream logistics assets of its sponsor, the refiner Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX). The IPO was initially intended to be 15 million shares at an indicated range of $19 to $21. According to the IPO prospectus the minimum yield was to be $0.85 per unit on an annualized basis, which translates into a 4.25 percent annual yield at the initial midrange IPO price. This yield is pretty typical for a midstream MLP.

Demand for PSXP units proved to be very strong, so the deal was upsized to 16.4 million shares and the price increased to $23 a unit. But demand outstripped even the expanded offering, and units opened on July 23, 2013 at nearly $29, and traded as high as $36 in subsequent days before finally settling down in a range of $30 to $31. Then in the fourth quarter PSXP units raced forward, exceeding $38 at one point and presently trading at $37.16.

We've watched several midstream spinoffs from refiners hit the market with very low yields. Most recently, Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE: PSXP  ) was less than 3% when it debuted, and it collapsed even further with PSXP's first-day pop -- all this despite the average yield for an MLP in today's market coming in around 6%. Here's a quick look at what the other refining midstream MLPs are yielding right now.

Top 5 Tech Companies For 2016: Inovio Pharmaceuticals Inc (INO)

Inovio Pharmaceuticals, Inc., incorporated on June 29, 1983, is engaged in the development of a new generation of vaccines, called synthetic vaccines, focused on cancers and infectious diseases. The Company's SynCon technology enables the design of universal vaccines capable of providing cross-protection against existing or changing strains of pathogens, such as influenza and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The Company's electroporation delivery technology uses brief, controlled electrical pulses to increase cellular uptake of the vaccine. Its clinical programs include cervical dysplasia (therapeutic), avian influenza (preventive), prostate cancer (therapeutic), leukemia (therapeutic), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV vaccines. It is advancing preclinical research and clinical development for a universal seasonal/pandemic influenza vaccine, as well as preclinical work for other products, including malaria and prostate cancer vaccines. Its partners and collaborators incl ude University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, National Microbiology Laboratory of the Public Health Agency of Canada, Program for Appropriate Technology in Health/Malaria Vaccine Initiative (PATH/MVI), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Merck, ChronTech, University of Southampton, United States Military HIV Research Program (USMHRP), the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) and HIV Vaccines Trial Network (HVTN). As of December 31, 2011 it owned 16.1% interest in VGX Intl.

Inovios Solution

The Companys synthetic vaccine platform consists of its SynCon vaccine design process and electroporation delivery technology. It has developed a preclinical and clinical stage pipeline of vaccines. The Companys synthetic vaccines are designed to prevent a disease (prophylactic vaccines) or treat an existing disease (therapeutic vaccines). Its synthetic vaccine consists of a! deo xyribonucleic acid (DNA) plasmid encoding a selected antigen(s), which is introduced into cells of humans or animals with the purpose of evoking an immune response to the encoded antigen. The Companys synthetic vaccines are designed to generate specific antibody and/or T-cell responses.

The Companys SynCon technology provides processes that employ bioinformatics, which combine extensive genetic data and sophisticated algorithms. Its design process uses the genetic make-up of a common antigen(s) from multiple strains of a virus within a viral sub-type or taxonomic group (family) of pathogens, such as HIV, hepatitis C virus (HCV), human papillomavirus (HPV), influenza and other diseases to synthetically create a new antigen for the desired pathogen target that does not exist in nature. Its synthetic vaccine candidates are being delivered into cells of the body using its electroporation (EP) DNA delivery technology.

Cancer Synthetic Vaccines

The Company has two broad types of cancer vaccines: preventive (or prophylactic) vaccines, which are intended to prevent cancer from developing in healthy people, and treatment (or therapeutic) vaccines, which are intended to treat an existing cancer by strengthening the bodys natural defenses against the cancer. Two types of cancer preventive vaccines are available in the United States. The United States Food and Drug Administration (the FDA) has approved two vaccines, Gardasil and Cervarix that protect against infection by the two types of HPV-types 16 and 18-that cause approximately 70% of all cases of cervical cancer worldwide. In addition, Gardasil protects against infection by two additional HPV types, 6 and 11, which are responsible for about 90% of all cases of genital warts in males and females but do not cause cervical cancer.

Cervarix manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, is composed of virus-like particles (VLPs) made with proteins from HPV t ypes 16 and 18. Cervarix is approved for use in females age! s 10 to 2! 5 for the prevention of cervical cancer caused by HPV types 16 and 18. Gardasil manufactured by Merck, is approved for use in females for the prevention of cervical cancer, and some vulvar and vaginal cancers, caused by HPV types 16 and 18 and for use in males and females for the prevention of genital warts caused by HPV types 6 and 11. The vaccine is approved for these uses in females and males ages 9 to 26. The FDA has also approved a cancer preventive vaccine that protects against hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

Inovios VGX-3100 is designed to raise immune responses against the E6 and E7 genes of HPV types 16 and 18 that are present in both pre-cancerous and cancerous cells transformed by these HPV types. E6 and E7 are oncogenes that play an integral role in transforming HPV-infected cells into cancerous cells. In March 2011, it initiated a randomized, double-blind Phase II study of VGX-3100 delivered using the CELLECTRA intramuscular electroporation device in women with HPV Type 16 or 18 and diagnosed with, but not yet treated for, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 2/3. The study is designed to enroll 148 subjects. In January 2011, it announced the publication of a scientific paper in the journal Human Vaccines detailing potent immune responses in a preclinical study of its SynCon vaccine for prostate cancer targeting two antigens, prostate specific antigen (PSA) and prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA).

In January 2011, the Company announced the regulatory approval of a Phase II clinical trial (WIN Trial) to treat leukemia utilizing its new ELGEN 1000 automated vaccine delivery device. The single dose level, Phase II study, called WT1 immunity via DNA fusion gene vaccination in haematological malignancies by intramuscular injection followed by intramuscular electroporation. Cancer Vaccines encodes for hTERT, an antigen relate d to non-small cell lung, breast and prostate cancers. The vaccine is delivered using its electroporation delivery technology.

!

Infectious Disease Synthetic Vaccines

In March 2011, the Company announced the initiation of a follow-on open label, single dose Phase II clinical study in collaboration with ChronTech of the ChronVac-C HCV DNA vaccine delivered using its electroporation technology in treatment naive HCV infected individuals. Its HIV vaccines consist of candidates for HIV prevention, as well as therapy or treatment. PENNVAX-B is designed to target HIV clade B (most commonly found in the United States, North America, Australia and the European Union (EU). PENNVAX-G is designed to target HIV clades A, C and D, which are more commonly found in Asia, Africa, Russia and South America. This Phase I clinical study of PENNVAX-B (HVTN-080) vaccinated 48 healthy, HIV-negative volunteers to assess safety and levels of immune responses generated by Inov ios PENNVAX-B vaccine delivered with its CELLECTRA electroporation device. PENNVAX-B is a SynCon vaccine that targets HIV gag, pol, and env proteins.

The Companys VGX-3400X targets H5N1. The vaccine consists of three distinct DNA plasmids coded for a consensus hemagglutinin (HA) antigen derived from different H5N1 virus strains; a consensus neuraminidase (NA) antigen derived from different N1 sequences; and a consensus nucleoprotein (NP) fused to a small portion of the m2 protein (m2E) based on a broader cross-section of influenza viruses in addition to H5N1 and H1N1. Conventional vaccines are strain-specific and have limited ability to protect against genetic shifts in the influenza strains they target. They are therefore modified annually in anticipation of the next flu seasons new strain(s). It is focused on developing DNA-based influenza vaccines able to provide broad protection against known as well as newly emerging, unknown seasonal and pandemic influenza strains.

Animal Health/Veterinary

VGX Animal Health, Inc. (VGX AH), a majority-owned subsidiary, has licensed LifeTide, a plasmid-based growth hormone releasing hormo! ne (GHRH)! technology for swine. LifeTide is one of only four DNA-based treatments approved for use in animals and is the only DNA-based agent delivered using electroporation that has been granted marketing approval (Australia). VGX AH is also developing a GHRH-based treatment for cancer and anemia in dogs and cats. It is developing a synthetic vaccine for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) administered by its vaccine delivery technology. The FMD virus is one of the most infectious diseases affecting farm animals, including cattle, swine, sheep and goats, and is a serious threat to global food safety.

The Company competes with Crucell N.V, Sanofi-Aventis, Novartis, Inc., GlaxoSmithKline plc, Merck, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Inc., Novartis, Inc., MedImmune and CSL.

Every year more and more people are becoming health conscious and healthcare is one such industry which I feel can never be in slump. It's is just brilliant of Apple to embed a hardware in a smartphone which will be able to cash on this opportunity. The iPhone 5S already has the hardware components to support the Healthbook app and once the iOS 8 is released for the next iPhone model and upgrades are available for the iPhone 5S, Apple will be poised to see huge surge in the demand for its devices. Certain incidents such as the top Apple executives meeting the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and former Mashimo Corp. Chief Medical Officer Michael O'Reilly joining Apple are clearly hinting that the company's mobile health dreams will very soon turn into reality.

Despite recent anti-tobacco laws passed by the European Union and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the U.S, the company's pricing power has helped maintain its margins. In 2012, for! example, Phillip Morris hiked prices on its products in Russia, Germany, Belgium, Canada, France, Greece and Spain, among others. Although the necessary measure caused substantial volume declines in these countries, consumers rapidly became accustomed to the increased prices, and returned to their habitual product consumption. Given the success of this strategy, the firm is likely to rely on it in Japan for 2014, where taxes are expected to increase yet again by 8%, after the 40% spike in October 2010.

Best Construction Material Companies To Buy Right Now

Shares of Target (NYSE: TGT  ) slid lower on Tuesday, despite the broader market climbing higher. Investors punished Target stock after the discount retailer cut its first-quarter profit outlook. The company now says its first-quarter earnings will come in below $1.10, which was the low end of its prior estimate of $1.10 to $1.20 per share. Not surprisingly, Target blamed the unusually cold weather for its weak sales. Nevertheless, Target stock is up more than 16% year to date and currently trades at around $68 a share, despite these seasonal setbacks.

A brave new retail world
With many investors left wondering if Target stock has more room to run, let's look at Target's past and where the company is headed in the year to come. In 2012, Target was able to successfully adapt to changes in the retail environment even as other big-box stores, such as Best Buy (NYSE: BBY  ) , suffered.

Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) and other e-commerce sites have dramatically shifted the retail landscape over the past few years. Unfortunately, the world's largest electronics retailer was slow to change with it. For more than a year, Best Buy refused to acknowledge that it was being hurt by "showrooming," and instead insisted that its stores offered value where Amazon could not by providing home installations. We all know how that has worked out for Best Buy.

Nigeria reformed banking system has provided many foreigners with an attractive means to invest in the fast-growing domestic economy. The banking industry is important, not only because of the rise of microfinance, but because of the move by banks into consumer banking. Hot Penny Companies To Own For 2015

MJ Kim/Getty Images Frugality is a great thing. It can pave the way to financial freedom, security and even wealth. But it can also pave the way to madness, if you take it too far. Here are some signs you might be taking things to the extreme -- and what you should be doing instead. 1. You Put Way Too Much Time Into Penny-Pinching The internet is full of people who like to brag about the crazy measures they take to save money. They rinse out Ziploc baggies so they can reuse them. They spend hours each week clipping and organizing coupons to save a few extra cents on a can of soup that they don't even particularly like. They dissect nearly empty toothpaste tubes so they can scrape out the last bits of toothpaste. They spend far too much time, in other words, for not nearly enough return. Creativity and a do-it-yourself spirit is one thing, but if you find yourself devoting hours of your life to shaving off a few cents here and there, it's time to reconsider your savings strategy. Instead of making your own laundry detergent, could you start line-drying your clothes to cut back on utility costs? Instead of reusing the same sheet of tin foil over and over again, could you invest in some Tupperware so you can store your food without any waste? At some point, you need to recognize that your time has a value, too, and wasting it on extreme savings strategies isn't always the best way to spend it. I advise people to be frugal with their time, not just their money. 2. You Sacrifice Quality for the Sake of Pinching Pennies If you've ever re-used dirty bathtub water, or if you use rags as "reusable toilet paper," you're pushing frugality too far.

There are certain things in life that are worth paying a little more for.

Hot Penny Companies To Own For 2015: Paragon Shipping Inc.(PRGN)

Paragon Shipping Inc. provides shipping transportation services worldwide. The company engages in the ocean transportation of various drybulk cargoes and containers. Its fleet consists of 11 drybulk vessels with a total carrying capacity of 747,994 dwt. The company was founded in 2006 and is based in Voula, Greece.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 name shipping player that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Paragon Shipping (PRGN), which is engaged in transporting drybulk cargoes, including such commodities as iron ore, coal, grain and other materials along shipping routes worldwide. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 114%.

If you take a look at the chart for Paragon Shipping, you'll notice that this stock just recently took out its 50-day moving average of $4.19 a share with strong upside volume. Shares of PRGN are showing relative strength today, despite the overall market weakness, which shows this stock is in strong demand at current levels. This move is now starting to push shares of PRGN within range of triggering a big breakout trade

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in PRGN if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $4.90 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 25,811 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then PRGN will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $5.70 a share. If that level gets taken out with volume, then PRGN could easily tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $7 to $8.35 a share.

Traders can look to buy PRGN off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $4.19 a share, or below its 200-day moving average at $3.74 a share. One can also buy PRGN off strength once it clears $4.90 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point. I would add to either position once PRGN takes out its 52-week high at $5.70 a share with strong upside volume flows.
