BofA Goes to the Head of the Class by Teaming Up with Khan Academy

Top 5 High Dividend Companies To Own For 2015

www.bettermoneyhabits.com home page screen capturewww.bettermoneyhabits.com In 2013, the American Customer Satisfaction Index ranked Bank of America (BAC) below JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Citigroup (C), and Wells Fargo (WFC) for overall customer satisfaction. A 2012 J.D. Power report on mortgage lenders ranked Bank of America dead last out of a field of 14 contenders. And a poll of banking customers conducted in 2013 -- this time asking customers their opinions of 30 banks -- came to precisely the same conclusion. So, what's a bank to do when its reputation is this deep in the dumper? The first step should obviously be damage control -- burnishing the bank's reputation by any means possible. And the second step ought to be taking action to address the reasons that customers hate the bank in the first place. Bank of America's recent alliance with Khan Academy accomplishes both of these things. Khan Gets Kudos Few websites boast a reputation as good as that of Khan Academy, the totally free, nonprofit site that former hedge fund analyst Sal Khan set up in 2006 to help teach kids (and adults) about everything from basic mathematics to the Federal Reserve's policy of quantitative easing. PCMag.com rates Khan Academy 4.5 stars (out of 5) as "a place where you can learn, or simply refresh your learning, in dozens of subjects." Yelp.com (YELP) gives Khan 4.5 stars, with one reviewer exclaiming: "I wish I could give it 10 stars." So when Bank of America teamed up with Khan Academy last April to build bettermoneyhabits.com, it picked the right "halo" to bask in. The substance looks pretty good, too. In a release announcing the site's opening, Bank of America boasted that its new website would offer "free, self-paced, easy-to-understand resources to develop better money habits" -- and would provide these resources not just free but also "commercial-free." And the website's open to anyone, not just Bank of America customers. From Bad Reputation to Good, Untainted Advice

Best Blue Chip Stocks To Own Right Now

Stocks have turned down to start the new week, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) has sunk into the red on this Monday. More than half of the blue chip index's members are falling so far, helping the Dow to lose 50 points, or around 0.4%, as of 2:15 p.m. EDT. News from the Federal Reserve's stimulus program has prompted some investors to back off of the recent run-up on the markets-here's what you need to know.

A slowdown ahead for the Fed?
On Friday, TheWall Street Journal reported the Fed's plan to slowly decreaseits current $85 billion per month bond-buying measure, weaning the markets off of stimulus gradually while keeping an eye on employment and inflation. Investors had to know the stimulus program would end eventually, although considering how well stocks have performed on the back of easy money, any disappointment from Wall Street over a potential end to quantitative easing comes as little surprise. The Fed hasn't released any definitive start date for winding down its latest QE measure yet, but with unemployment recently falling to 7.5%, the central bank seems more confident in the economy's footing.

BlackBerry's decision to jettison the PlayBook is a good one. The device never had a chance at replicating the user experience Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) created with the iPad, because of a lack of developer support. With Android vendors including Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) and even Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) itself selling high-quality 7-inch tablets for $200 or less, it became virtually impossible for competitors (aside from Apple) to make money in this market.

Tamara Walsh: Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) stock has enjoyed a solid run so far this year, with its stock price surging more than 25% year-to-date. However, there could be more momentum ahead for shares of Apple following the iDevice maker's product refresh this week. At a media event on Tuesday the tech giant unveiled two new, larger iPhone models, as well as a smartwatch and payments platform called Apple Pay. Apple already has the payment information for around 800 million iTunes and App Store customers. Therefore, this move puts Apple in an advantageous position to capitalize on the growing mobile payments market. Meanwhile, the wearable smart watch device marks the first new product category for Apple in about four years.

Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG) have been in a battle for a long time. The Cupertino-based organization spent a ton of its $40 billion war chest to cut down Google's Android. Then again, Apple has done well despite stiff rivalry. Its results are presently superior to Google, and the organization is picking up footing with its iphones. Also, with a strong quarterly dividend and a share buyback in the billions, Apple stock is a superior purchase to Google. IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) , though, fell 0.6%, which made it the biggest loser in the Dow on a percentage basis. As numerous Fool contributors have noted earlier today, Oracle scored a big win in its challenge to IBM's strategy of dominating the Big Data market, when a study showed that Oracle's technology performed better than IBM's. As troubling as that is for Big Blue, it ordinarily wouldn't have a big impact on the broader stock market. But because IBM's share price is so high, it has a disproportionately heavy weighting in the price-weighted Dow. As a result, if IBM can't resolve its problems, a stock decline could make it very hard for the Dow to advance overall.

Of course, this is just a thought experiment for how the company could continue and reward shareholders in its current form. I think a buyout is a much more likely outcome. The company is an extremely tempting target for a Crescent Point (CSCTF.PK), Chevron (CVX), or Exxon (XOM). With an Enterprise Value of about $3.5 billion, it's a bite size for larger integrated oil companies. According to a 3rd party estimate, the present value of Lighstream's booked reserves alone is significantly higher than that. And Lightstream has a huge inventory of unbooked locations and a million acres of completely undeveloped land.

Wall Street's estimate for earnings per share is $1.40, which will be important for the company to beat, though perhaps it's not the most important detail of the report. The recent pullback in the stock market brings a silver lining for some companies.

Those firms that have announced new or extended stock buyback programs can now retire more shares for a fixed dollar amount. And if the market slumps deeper in coming weeks and months, these buyback programs will deliver an even better bang for their buck.

I recently wrote about the stunning $455 billion in stock that has been reacquired by firms over the past four quarters, noting that the trend isn't just a passing fad. In fact, the past two months of buyback announcements signal that the current quarter will be another sizzler.

A month ago, I took note of roughly $20 billion worth of buyback plans announced in July (which only partially reflects the full amount of buybacks that month) and I've tallied the buyback programs announced in August (among companies buying at least $400 million), and this new group accounts for an impressive $29 billion in share buybacks.

The U.S. Justice Department is preparing to file civil fraud charges against Citigroup and Bank of America's Merrill Lynch unit over their sale of flawed mortgage securities ahead of the financial crisis, according to people familiar with the probes. Civil investigators have compiled evidence that allegedly shows that investors lost tens of billions of dollars after purchasing securities Citigroup (C) had marketed as safe even though the bank had reason to believe otherwise, one person said. An investigation into the mortgage securities marketed by Merrill Lynch, which Bank of America (BAC) agreed to acquire at the height of the crisis in 2008, is also close to completion, two other people said. Probes against Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Credit Suisse (CS) are also underway and progressing, according to another two people familiar with those cases. Representatives for all four banks declined to comment. The U.S. banking industry, which faces a range of mortgage-related lawsuits, has contended that many of the alleged investor losses can be attributed to the financial crisis, and that they shouldn't be held liable for marketing a variety of mortgage securities that ultimately soured. The Justice Department hasn't determined the exact timing of upcoming lawsuits, the sources said, although U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder told Reuters earlier this month that the department planned to bring more mortgage-related cases in early 2014, while declining to name which companies were targeted. The probes could also lead to settlements instead of lawsuits. The cases stem from a government task force the Obama administration created in early 2012 to probe the sale of shoddy home loans repackaged for investors. Last month, JPMorgan Chase (JPM) entered a $13 billion settlement with the Justice Department and other agencies, to resolve charges that the bank overstated the quality of mortgages it was

    Won't you buy me a Mercedes-Benz?
One of the world's most iconic luxury vehicle nameplates was formed on June 28, 1926, when Benz & Cie and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft finally merged after a two-year corporate partnership to create Daimler-Benz AG (NASDAQOTH: DDAIF  ) . The Benz name, despite a stronger automotive pedigree (Karl Benz did invent the modern automobile, after all), wound up secondary to Daimler's Mercedes brand. Daimler's three-pointed star logo also wound up on the new company's cars, further cementing its primacy in the ostensible merger of equals.

The export boost will help out some of Germany's biggest corporations and stocks, however. German automakers have taken a beating in the recession, and May didn't help: New-car sales in the country fell by nearly 10% for the month after notching a rare gain in April. Both BMW (NASDAQOTH: BAMXY  ) and Daimler (NASDAQOTH: DDAIF  ) have performed better than many carmakers in Germany this year, but both saw sales flatten over the early part of the year. Daimler's stock has performed well in the year so far, but to avoid any fall, the company -- along with BMW -- announced that it will not participate in the traditional summer break during which German automakers close their factories for a few weeks. Right now, neither company can afford that.

3 Stocks Shelling Out Surefire Dividends

Top Dividend Stocks to BuyFor dividend investors, there’s good news … and bad news.

The good news is that, if you’re looking for income, it sure hasn’t been hard to find. As of the second quarter’s end, the percentage of stocks paying dividends in the S&P 500 was sitting at a 15-year high. And zooming in on just the last decade, aggregate dividend payments have doubled overall.

The bad news, though, is that many dividend-paying stocks sport misleading headline yields or unsustainable payouts — hardly the kind of income stock you want to snatch up for the long haul, or as a way to weather the current political menu of a government shutdown for dinner and the debt ceiling crisis for dessert.

With that in mind, we sorted through piles of dividend stocks to find some that do offer sustainable, surefire payouts for loyal shareholders thanks to impressive payout histories and sustainable payout ratios.

Take a look:

Johnson & Johnson

Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ)Dividend Yield: 3.02%

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) isn’t dependable just because it provides everything from Band-Aids to Tylenol to baby shampoo. It also provides shareholders with steady-eddy dividend. Yes, Johnson & Johnson has been paying a dividend since 1944 — a long enough track record to make it a Dependable Dividend stock.

Plus, JNJ boasts a mind-blowing 51 consecutive years of dividend increases, with the payout more than tripling in the past decade alone.

That trend will more than likely continue considering Johnson & Johnson paid out a reasonable $2.40 per in dividends last year — only 47% of its adjusted earnings. Factoring in a recent dividend increase, JNJ is slated to tally a $2.59-per-share annual payout for 2013 — also 47% of the $5.46 per share Johnson & Johnson is slated to earn.

If you want consistency, you got it.

Things look just as promising when you consider cash. JNJ’s payout was just over half of its $4.43 in free cash flow per share for 2012. And the diversified consumer goods giant boasted over $17 billion on its balance sheet in the most recent quarter — a pretty hefty cushion in case waters get rough here or there.

Chevron

Chevron Corp. (NYSE:CVX)Dividend Yield: 3.31%

If you’re looking to dig up a solid dividend, look no further than oil and gas giant Chevron (CVX). The Dependable Dividend stock has been paying a dividend for an jaw-dropping 101 years, and has increased that payout by over 185% in the past decade alone.

On top of that, you can count on that dividend for the long haul. In 2012, Chevron paid out $3.51 per share in dividends — less than 28% of its total adjusted earnings for the year.

Plus, CVX upped its quarterly payout this year — something its done every year since the turn of the century — and that $4-per-share annual payout still looks sustainable, as the company is slated to earn $12.16 for the year.

The one thing to note is that Chevron does have a high payout ratio when you compare its dividend to its free cash flow, as a good chunk of the company’s operating cash goes to capital expenditures — which have been on the way up of late. But there’s still some wiggle room; last year’s dividends took up a manageable 86% of free cash flow, and earnings (and thus FCF) are slated for solid growth of 7% per year over the next half-decade.

And for the cherry on top, Chevron has a huge war chest of cash to dip into if things get a little rocky — and that cash cache has been growing in recent years. At the end of the most recent quarter, the oil and gas giant had more than $20.6 billion in cash and equivalents vs. a mere (relatively speaking, of course) $8 billion back in 2009.

Bank of Montreal

BankOfMontreal185Dividend Yield: 4.23%

Head north of the border and you’ll come across Bank of Montreal (BMO), our final safe income pick. If you were impressed by Chevron’s century of dividend payments, consider this: BMO has been rewarding loyal shareholders since 1829. For perspective, remember that the U.S. was just over 50 years old at that time.

Bank of Montreal also hasn’t been shy about ramping up its payments. Over the past decade, BMO’s dividend has soared 120%, including increases in 2012 and 2013.

Last year’s bump put BMO’s annual payout at $2.82 per share — a reasonable 50%, give or take, of the company’s earnings and free cash flow.

And factoring in the most recent increase — which bumped the quarterly payout to 74 cents per share, good for a yield north of 4% — the dividend looks just as sustainable. Based on expected adjusted earnings, Bank of Montreal will be using only 48% of its earnings to reward shareholders this year, and 46% of its earnings next year.

And that’s only if it doesn’t toss shareholders yet another dividend boost. And such a boost seems likely considering BMO is slated for double-digit earnings growth over the next half-decade — higher than the industry average.

As of this writing, Alyssa Oursler did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.

Company-Operated and Franchised Restaurants

The Company operates its McDonald-branded restaurants under two basic structures: Company-operated restaurants operated by the Company and franchised restaurants operated by franchisees. Under both operating alternatives the real estate location may ! either be owned or leased by the Company. It owns, fully manages and operates the Company-operated restaurants and retains any operating profits generated by such restaurants, after paying operating expenses and the franchise and other fees owed to McDonald under the Master Franchise Agreements (MFAs). In Company-operated restaurants, it assumes the capital expenditures for the building and equipment of the restaurant and, if it owns the real estate location, for the land as well. Under its franchise arrangements, franchisees provide a portion of the capital required by initially investing in the equipment, signs, seating and decor of their restaurants, and by reinvesting in the business over time. It is required by the MFAs to own the real estate or to secure long-term leases for franchised restaurant sites. It subsequently leases or subleases the property to franchisees.

In exchange for the lease and services, franchisees pay a monthly rent to the Company, based on the greater of a fixed rent or a certain percentage of gross sales. In addition to this monthly rent, it collects the monthly continuing franchise fee, which generally is 5% of the United States dollar equivalent of the restaurant gross sales, and pays these fees to McDonald pursuant to the MFAs. However, if a franchisee fails to pay its monthly continuing franchise fee, it remains liable for payment in full of these fees to McDonald. As of December 31, 2010, it was engaged in several joint ventures, which collectively owned 24 restaurants, in Argentina, Chile and Colombia.

Restaurant Categories

The Company classifies its restaurants into one of four categories: freestanding, food court, in-store and mall stores. Freestanding restaurants are the type of restaurant, which have ample indoor seating and include a drive-through area. Food court restaurants are located in malls and consist of a front counter and kitchen and do not have their own seating area. In-store restaurants are part ! of a larg! er building and resemble freestanding restaurants, except for the lack of a drive-through area. Mall stores are located in malls like food court restaurants, but have their own seating areas. As of December 31, 2010, 808 (or 46.2%) of its restaurants were freestanding, 359 (or 20.5%) were food court, 265 (or 15.1%) were in-stores and 319 (or 18.2%) were mall stores. In addition, it has four non-traditional stores, such as food carts.

christianz1969/Flickr Americans lately have been transferring their love of fast-casual restaurant food to stocks of companies in the segment. Late last month, "better burger" specialist The Habit Restaurants (HABT) launched an initial public offering that doubled in price within hours of hitting the market. Like a meal from one of The Habit's more traditional fast-food rivals, though, the feeling of satisfaction didn't last: The shares started to drop after the initial euphoria. But that isn't stopping other fast-casual operators from listing on the exchange. They're finding, though, what works in the kitchen isn't necessarily successful on the market. IPOh Yes IPOs of fast-casual chain operators are coming to the market faster than you can get a refill at a soda machine. This year alone has seen the market debut not only of The Habit, but also the Mediterranean-flavored Zoe's Kitchen (ZOES) and West Coast chicken griller El Pollo Loco Holdings (LOCO), among others. Like The Habit, the stocks of the latter two saw impressive first-day rises (although they didn't pop quite as high as those of the burger purveyor). Why the excitement? Some of it can certainly be ascribed to the IPO market itself, which has had a frothy year. As of this writing, 262 companies have gone public, a 25 percent rise over the same period of 2013. In terms of total proceeds from IPOs, 2014 is set to be the best year for at least the past decade. Building a Better Burrito But likely a bigger factor is that the fast-casual segment has one great model that investors are hoping the newcomers can at least partially replicate -- Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG). Since going public in 2006, the stock of the now-ubiquitous chain has gone through the roof. Its IPO was priced at $22 a share and doubled in its first day of trading. Since then, its shares have ballooned -- at the moment, they trade at nearly $660, for a hard-to-believe 2,900-plus-percent rise from the issue price. It's not t

Buffalo Wild Wings faces stiff competition from McDonald's Corp(MCD), Darden Restaurants Inc. (DRI) and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (CMG). Last year, McDonald faced chicken wing problem and was left with 10 million pounds of unsold chicken wings. This made Buffalo Wild Wings to secure its position. Further, it was selling wings by the portion instead of by the number. Darden Restaurants is not performing well, and its fiscal second-quarter earnings missed consensus by a large margin. Its key brand Olive Garden also underperformed for the majority of fiscal 2013. Further, the company is planning to spin off its Red Lobster brand. This paved the way for Buffalo Wild Wings to dominate the market.

Top Blue Chip Companies To Buy For 2014

Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesThe Dow Jones news ticker in Times Square, New York City. NEW YORK -- Investment bank Goldman Sachs Group (GS), credit-card company Visa (V), and footwear Nike (NKE) will join the blue chip Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) Dow Jones industrial average, the index managers said Tuesday, in the biggest shake-up for the 30-stock average in nearly a decade. The three companies will replace Bank of America (BAC), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Alcoa (AA), all lower-priced stocks that exert a lesser pull on the price-weighted index. The changes will be effective on Sept. 23, S&P Dow Jones Indices said in a statement. The average, first established in 1896, includes 30 stocks, but very little money is indexed to its performance, unlike the broader Standard & Poor's 500 (^GSPC) or other indexes. In addition, because it is weighted by price, companies that are smaller in value with higher prices have more influence on the average. "Wow, those are big changes," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer of Solaris Group in Bedford Hills, N.Y. "The Dow is really an antiquated index. It is price-weighted, which makes no sense. But there are still are some people that pay attention to it, and some technicians, so it has an influence on some people." Google (GOOG) and other names were considered for inclusion but passed over because of high stock prices, David Blitzer, managing director and chairman of the S&P Index Committee, told CNBC. The index manager said the changes were prompted by the low stock price of the three companies slated for removal and a desire to diversify the make-up of the index. Alcoa, in particular, has been seen as a candidate for elimination for some time, as the stock's market value of $8.5 billion is easily the lowest in the average. It is the first three-for-three change to the index since April 8, 2004, when American International Group (AIG), Pfizer (PFE) and Verizon (VZ) replaced AT&T (T), Eastman Kodak and International Paper (IP).

Richard Drew/AP NEW YORK -- The stock market started November on a strong note as investors reacted to an expansion in U.S. manufacturing last month. The improvement came during what could have been a difficult month for the U.S. economy, with a partial government shutdown that lasted 16 days and a narrowly averted default on the U.S. government's debt, which could have rattled financial markets. "With what happened in the last two months, it's amazing how strong this market has been," said Bob Doll, chief equity strategist at Nuveen Asset Management. The Institute for Supply Management reported that its manufacturing index increased to 56.4, the highest level since April 2011. That was better than the 55.1 figure economists were expecting, according financial data provider FactSet. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) rose 69.80 points, or 0.5 percent, to 15,615.55. The Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) rose 5.10 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,761.64. The Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) rose 2.34 points, or 0.1 percent, to 3,922.04. Energy stocks lagged the market after Chevron (CVX) reported that its third-quarter income fell 6 percent, missing analysts' estimates, due to weakness in the company's oil refining business. Chevron fell $1.95, or 1.6 percent, to $118.01. The energy sector was also weighed down by a drop in the price of oil. Crude oil fell $1.77, or 1.8 percent, to $94.61 a barrel. The positive start to this month's trading comes after a strong October for the stock market. The S&P 500 closed at a record high seven times during the month, most recently on Tuesday. It ended October with a gain of 4.5 percent. However, some investors have expressed skepticism that stocks can keep up this rapid pace pace heading into the last two months of the year. The S&P 500 is up 23 percent so far this year, while the average annual return on the S&P 500 is around 8 percent. Stocks are also starting to look expensive by some measures. Investo

    Tale of the tape
IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) will be a 34-year veteran of the Dow by the end of next month. Based in the suburbs north of New York City, IBM has been producing cutting-edge technology for over a century, which gives it real claim to the title of "World's Oldest Tech Company." IBM employs over 430,000 people, but it's remarkably nimble for such a massive company. "Nonstrategic" parts of IBM's business worth a total of $15 billion in annual revenue have been divested over the past decade, and its three major new initiatives (Smarter Planet, data analytics, and cloud services) all enjoyed double-digit revenue growth in 2012. Due to the Dow's price-weighting system, IBM is its single most important component -- a move in IBM stock prices will have several times the impact of a move in nearly every other stock on the Dow.

Ben Husmann/Flickr The words "friendly" and "fraud" may not seem to go together, but friendly fraud -- also known as chargeback fraud -- is a real problem for a lot of online merchants. Friendly fraud happens when a customer fraudulently reports to their financial institution that a charge on their credit card isn't legitimate; the customer will typically be refunded the money immediately, leaving the merchant on the hook for the cash. Friendly fraud may be intentional theft, like shoplifting, but some customers may do it accidentally -- reporting a charge because they don't realize another member of their household made the purchase or the charge information on their statement doesn't match up to a recognized retailer name, which can happen if the retailer uses a third-party payment system like PayPal. With identity theft at an all-time high and banks eager to reassure consumers that their identity (and their money) is safe with fraud protection guarantees, it's become increasingly easy for cardholders to use these protections to commit fraud. Retailers Shoulder the Burden Whether chargeback fraud is intentional or not, retailers are losing billions; Visa estimates $11.8 billion was lost to friendly fraud in 2012. For online merchants, who never physically swiped a card, it can be difficult to prove that a charge was legitimate -- making chargebacks a game of he said, she said, where the customer usually wins. What's more, if a merchant has more than 1 percent of their charges reversed as chargebacks, they can find themselves shut down by Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA) -- which can mean going out of business entirely. As a result, businesses are fighting friendly fraud in a lot of different ways. Unlike J. Crew and Tory Burch, the reason I want in on Five Guys is for the beautiful simplicity of the business. Murrell now oversees a business that should generate over $1 billion in revenue in 2013. While the company is still far short of McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) $6.6 billion, Five Guys seems to be managing a feat that McDonald's has failed at over the last few quarters: growth.

Sure, Amazon stock analysts think AMZN is a buy. But I simply can’t wrap my head around the fact that Amazon stock trades at disgusting 140 times expected 2014 earnings. That’s a huge premium to Google(GOOG) stock, which has also been going strong, yet sports a multiple of just 20. And Apple(AAPL) stock goes for just 11 times forward earnings.

First of all, comparing the number of Lumias sold to the number of all mobile phones sold to reach a market share value of 1% is pretty misleading. The same calculation puts Apple's (AAPL) market share below 8%. We all know that when calculating a phone's market share, we can't look at all phones in the world because smartphones have a separate market than feature phones, some of which may sell for as cheap as $20. This is like saying Porsche has a market share way below 0.1% in the car market, when in fact, Porsche's market share should only be calculated against luxury cars, not all cars. If we look at all mobile phones, Nokia's market share nears 20% rather than 1%.
